Events and Programs
The Friends of SCNP provide lots of events that might bring understanding, joy, and a sense of contribution. If you have a Facebook account, we recommend you follow us there and sign up as “going” when you see an event you plan to attend.
If you would like to see some of our past events, we generally include a summary of the previous month’s events in our newsletter. You can find issues at our newsletter page – and you can subscribe for free.
Great Backyard Bird Count
February 15, 2025 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am
The Friends of Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve is hosting our 18th Great Backyard Bird Count. Come join us as we gather at 8 a.m. in the parking lot and fan out in small groups for the two-hour count. Bring binoculars, appropriate clothing and be sure to download and use the Merlin birdsong identification app. It will help!
Checklists submitted help researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Birds of Canada learn more about how birds are doing, and how to protect them and the environment we share. Last year over 642,000 citizen scientists worldwide submitted their bird observations online, recording 7,920 different species.
At the preserve last year 176 birds across 34 species were identified on a cold windy day. But while it sent some birds to ground, others were out in force. An osprey appeared! The first ever for the count. The final tally was 176 birds counted, representing 34 different species. This is about average over the past 17 years of GBBC counts at SCNP.
All skill levels welcome. We all learn by bird-watching with others.
